Stock Library > Clare Island, County Mayo, Ireland
Clare Island is one of the three large inhabited islands located of the County Mayo coast. The island is situated right in the mouth of Clew Bay and was home to the legendary 16th century Pirate Queen, Granuaile. Granuaile, or Grace O'Malley was part of a great seafaring clan who patrolled the waters of the west coast of Ireland. Many of her castles, on Clare Island and dotted around Clew Bay, still stand in testament to her.
